OSHEM's International Certificate in Health, Safety & Environment (ICHSE) is structured across three levels, each aimed at a different point in someone's career and each assessed differently. If you're trying to work out which one fits — whether for yourself, your team, or a training programme you're building — here's how they actually differ.
ICHSE Awareness — Level 1
An introduction to workplace safety principles for workers and non-specialists. Covers hazard identification, basic risk assessment, PPE selection, and emergency procedures — the foundation everyone in a workplace should have, regardless of role.
ICHSE Practitioner — Level 2
A more comprehensive qualification for safety supervisors, team leaders, and HSE coordinators — people with actual responsibility for implementing safety procedures on site, not just following them. It's the most widely delivered of the three levels, which makes sense: it sits at exactly the point where most HSE careers start to take shape.
ICHSE Professional — Level 3
The advanced level, built for HSE managers, safety officers, and consultants. It goes beyond implementing procedures into designing HSE management systems, running advanced risk assessments, and leading investigations. Assessment reflects that step up — a written assignment plus a Zoom-based viva rather than a multiple-choice exam.

Which level should you start with?
There's no requirement to complete Awareness before Practitioner, or Practitioner before Professional — each level is a standalone qualification. The right starting point comes down to your actual role. If you're stepping into any workplace for the first time, Awareness gives you the baseline. If you already supervise a team or hold day-to-day safety responsibility, Practitioner reflects that more accurately. If you're setting HSE policy, managing a management system, or advising on risk at an organisational level, Professional is built for that scope of responsibility.
